Fin 2014, le Ryerson Image Centre expose Dispatch, photographies de guerre (1854-2008), corpus rassemblé par Thierry Gervais. Ces images montrent l’évolution de la représentation de la guerre des gravures du 19ème siècle aux images contemporaines (fixes ou animées), mais aussi les différences entre photo originale et photo publiée. Cela peut amener à une réflexion sur l’impact des images diffusées dans les médias (public lycéen). Les vidéos d’Harun Farocki (Serious games I-IV, 2009-10) complètent le sujet abordé dans l’exposition : le réalisateur se concentre sur l’utilisation des technologies des jeux vidéo par l’armée américaine pour entraîner ses soldats (simulations de combat) ou gérer le stress post-traumatique au retour. La encore, c’est l’impact de l’image qui peut être étudié par ce biais.
Dans le cadre de cette exposition, une conférence avec Louie Palu, photojournaliste canadien, a été organisée.
The Ryerson Image Centre is showing Dispatch, war photographs (1854-2008), a selection curated by Thierry Gervais. These images show how the representation of war has evolved over time, from 19th century prints to contemporary images (still or moving); the differences between the original shot and the published image are also taken into account. This can be the starting point to think about the impact of the images shown in the media (high school students). The screening of Harun Farocki’s videos (Serious games I-IV, 2009-2010) in parallel adds to the discussion started off by the exhibition: the film director focused on how video games technologies are used by the American army to train soldiers (fight simulation) or to deal with PTSD afterwards. Once again, the impact of the image can be studied here.
A lecture by the Canadian photojournalist Louie Palu was held in relation to this exhibition.
