Les nouveaux locaux du Ryerson Image Centre ont ouvert leurs portes en septembre 2012 en centre-ville. En plus d’être un bâtiment universitaire et un centre de recherche, il y a des salles d’exposition. L’exposition inaugurale était tirée d’un grand fonds d’archives photos dont le RIC a hérité : la Black Star Collection.
Archival Dialogues : Reading the Black Star Collection : le RIC a fait appel à huit artistes canadiens d’âge et de sensibilité différente et leur a donné carte blanche pour faire un projet à partir de la Black Star Collection. Dans presque tous les cas, les artistes ont réalisé un produit multimédia/multisupport : l’image fixe côtoie presque toujours l’image animée, et on trouve une installation de boîtes d’archives, des maquettes… Les artistes font revivre les images de la collection, et leur donnent un sens nouveau en les juxtaposant avec des images contemporaines. The Art of the archive présente des travaux d’étudiants de Ryerson, toujours autour de la Black Star Collection. Mais cette fois-ci l’accent est plus mis sur l’archive, là encore avec force multimédia.
The new building of the Ryerson Image Centre opened downtown in September 2012. It is not only a university building and a research centre, but also an exhibition space. The opening exhibition came from a large photo archive the RIC has inherited of: the Black Star Collection.
Archival Dialogues : Reading the Black Star Collection: the RIC asked eight Canadian artists of various ages and sensibilities and let them choose and organise images from the Black Star Collection. Most artists have come up with a multimedia display where photography very often stands next to moving images. There is also an installation made of archive boxes, models… The artists have given a new life to the images from the collection, as well as a new meaning by setting them up next to contemporary images. The art of the archive is the exhibition of works from Ryerson’s students. It also revolves around the Black Star Collection, but focuses more on the notion of archive than on the actual images. Here again, a lot of multimedia is to be found.
