Hors contexte ça peut poser un problème, ça peut être dangereux. La vitesse qu’on a aujourd’hui avec Internet peut être contre-productive.” (TC 1:30)

In this short video, war reporter Patrick Chauvel talks about the way he works – an opportunity to reflect on images: “Photos cannot always be pushished right when they are shot. The lack of context can be a problem, it can be dangerous. The speed we have today thanks to the Internet can be counterproductive. ” (TC 1:30). The video is in French with French subtitles.

Arte présente ici en moins de deux minutes un aspect déroutant des images détournées. Australie : photomontage pour la bonne cause, analyse l’image d’une fillette avec un koala devant des feux. Elle a beaucoup circulé sur les réseaux sociaux pour sensibiliser aux incendies qui ravagent le pays fin 2019/début 2020. Le photomontage original est revendiqué, mais sa diffusion ne risque-t-elle pas porter tort à la cause qu’elle veut défendre ?

Arte TV channel presents here in less than two minutes a confusing aspect of diverted images. Australia: photomontage for a good cause, focuses on the image of a girl holding a koala in front of huge fires. It has widely circulated on social networks to raise awareness of the fires destroying the country in late 2019 / early 2020. The original picture is clearly presented as a photomontage, but doesn’t broadcasting it increase the risk of doing wrong to the cause it wants to defend?

Son argumentation est illustrée par divers dessins d’époques et de contextes variés. L’humour des dessins détend mais n’altère en rien le sérieux du propos.

In a 15-minute presentation, the Swiss cartoonist Patrick Chappatte explains the need for satire, in particular through press cartoons. His argument is illustrated by various drawings from different time periods and contexts. The humor in the drawings is fun but does not alter the seriousness of the topic.

Karambolage, la courte émission de la chaîne franco-allemande Arte, permet de mieux connaître les cultures de ces deux pays. Deux émissions sont consacrées à l’image officielle du chef de l’Etat : le portrait photographique du Président de la République française, et le tableau représentant le chancelier allemand. L’émission peut se regarder dans les deux langues (français ou allemand).

Karambolage, a short program by the Franco-German TV channel Arte, is a way to learn about the culture of both countries. Two programs dealt with the official portrait of the chief of state : the French Republic President’s photograph, and the painting depicting the German Chancellor.
